Nyungwe National Park is one of the largest (1013km²) and biodiversity rich high altitude montane rainforests found in the western rift valley commonly known as the Albertine rift. The Albertine rift which is one of the important eco-regions for wildlife conservation in the world forms the epicenter of Africa's montane rainforest circle. It is dominated by a series of mountain chains, originating on the Lendu Plateau in northern Uganda and Congo, running south through the Rwenzori mountains, western Rwanda and Burundi, to some isolated massifs on the shores of Lake Tanganyika. Nyungwe National Park is one of the highly competitive destinations in East Africa for mostly those tourists with interests in rainforest wildlife and experience. It is particularly known for its unique primate viewing, bird safaris, and nature walks.

Primate Viewing: Nyungwe National Park is the only destination in the world where you can see more than five primate species including rare species such as Chimpanzee and Mountain monkeys and the Angolan black and while colobus monkeys. Nyungwe also boasts of a unique phenomenon in primate tourism because of its huge concentrations of habituated primates whose numbers range from 400 to 500 individuals in a single group.

Bird Safaris: Nyungwe National Park is also richer in bird endemism than any other protected area in the Albertine Rift. For keen birders, Nyungwe will enable them to see more species particularly those whose range is restricted to the mountain forests of the Albertine Rift. It has got 280 bird species and 27 of them are restricted to the Albertine Rift. Some of the highlights include the threatened grauer’s rush warbler found in the high altitude swamps and the great blue turaco an outlandish blue, red and green bird. Dedicated birdwatchers might never want to leave Nyungwe!

Nature Walks: Nyungwe National Park has also got a well maintained and rare network of nature walkways developed to enable tourists to view unique rainforest features and experiences. These walkways meander the gentle hills of the park accessing various attractions such as waterfalls and interesting over-the-canopy views.
